A Book You Should Read

I finished reading Guy Gavriel Kay's Ysabel just now.  I have been a fan of Kay's books for two decades and while I haven't read everything he's written, I've read a lot of it.  For years I've been telling people that Tigana is the finest fantasy novel I've ever read (a difficult admission for someone who writes fantasy novels for a living).  In my opinion, Ysabel is better.  And for those who have been reading Kay for a while, there are gifts in this book that will bring tears to your eyes.  Do yourself a favor and read it.

I just finished reading it day before yesterday. I read it in two sittings and kept thinking I would stop after the next bit, but there was never a place where I wasn't desperate to know what happened next.

I read it during workouts and so got through it more slowly, but I was thinking about the story and the characters constantly.

Hope you're doing well. Saw your name in the issue of Locus that just came. Congrats on the sale!

I'm halfway through and completely, utterly smitten. It's incredible. (But I also adore Tigana. I could read it a thousand times and still find new reasons to be enthralled.)

Kay is very, very good at what he does. I need to go back and read the Sarantium books, which are the only ones of his that I've missed.

[Spoilers included]

Wow. That's an incredible really powerful endorsement for Tigana, one I'm not sure is entirely justified, but very close to justified. Kay properly places the affects/effects of magic soundly in the mind. Where better to hide a country except in forgetfulness?

I wasn't going to read Ysabel, though. Now I shall....

No book is perfect -- Tigana certainly has a few flaws. But Kay is, I believe, a brilliant writer who creates wonderfully real worlds and characters who are as compelling as any in fantasy. Anyway, I think you'll like Ysabel.
