Hacked Again!

So, for the second time in about three months one of our credit cards has been hacked.  Weird things about it:  First, it was the new credit card that we got after the last one was hacked.  (We have several cards, but this is the only one that seems to be giving us trouble.)  Second, the false charges put on the credit card last time were for about $2,000.00 each and were charged at bike shops in Europe.  This time the false charge was for about $1,500.00 and was charged (wait for it....) at a bike shop in Europe.  And both times, we had put in a legitimate charge at one online seller in particular about three weeks before the problem arose.  I can't prove this last connection so I'm not going to give the name of the online merchant, but be careful who you order from, and if you can, place your orders by phone rather than over the net.

Tune in tomorrow for a new political cartoon from my friend Bryan Prindiville and me.

Yikes. We had one of our cards hacked too and it was a royal hassle. :C Sorry you have to deal with that again!

Thanks, Jen. The card companies make it pretty easy to correct the bill and get a new card, so we're fine. But it is alarming how often this is happening.

We were contacted by Bank of America a couple weeks back. Someone was sending through dinky amounts of $$ to test the card. So we closed it and had a new one overnight (wow).

I asked the guy how to prevent this. Said you really can't (in our case) as they were just running numbers until they found one that hit. In your case, you just have to stop ordering your research materials from places like "All Girls All The Time" and "Catapults R Us" (for that pesky boyfriend problem.

Umm... Could you PM me with the name of that online seller? I'd really like to not buy from them on accident... :)

As I say, the connection is tenuous, so I'm not going to reveal the name and trash their reputation based on my half-baked theories. Also, it's a specialty place that my wife orders from for one of her hobbies. The chances of you shopping there too are pretty slim.

For those of you who'd just love to have your own custom-built castle. Awesome. You can even get a portcullis of your very own. -- J
