My First Progress Bar

So I got another 1,500 words today and I'm ready to begin charting my progess on this book (the third and final volume in my Blood of the Southlands trilogy) for all to see. My thanks to Karen Miller for the link that made possible what is for me a huge technological leap (how pathetic, I know).

Hey wow!!! It worked!

All right, 14% is not all that impressive. But I started just under three weeks ago, so I'm pleased.

pretty cool
Progress bars are pretty good and all, but how do you know ahead of time how long your novel will be? Or is this just a ballpark figure, which is what I assume it to be? Knowing full well that as I assume I make an ass of you....oh, and me. But mostly you. Hee. :D

(Sorry, it's that kind of morning!)

Re: pretty cool
Thanks for the comment and question, Mark. Yes, it's an estimate, but an educated one. Actually, my friend C. E. Murphy blogged about this very issue the other day at our group blog site -- http://magicalwords.net Book length for me (and for Catie as well) has become something that I can pace my books for. So that I can have in mind 140,000 as my intended length, and develop my narrative in such a way as to meet that goal (in an approximate sense). If you're interested in much more detail about this, check out Catie's post.
