On the Road Again

On the road today, making my way up to Charlottesville, Virginia for the Virginia Festival of the book.

Too bad, too.  Because I have a full-blown rant in my head that I wish I had time to type out.  John McCain likened withdrawing troops from Iraq to a "betrayal?"  "A stain on our character?"  So basically anyone who disagrees with him on Iraq is betraying our country.  Does he realize that this includes about 60% of the country according to recent polls?  What nerve!  What a tool!  What a buffoon.....Hey, maybe there's a BOW Award in his future!

Stay tuned.

OMG. I just read this book (see my blog) that covered this topic extensively. According to the author, the US is not interested in withdrawing from Iraq, because:

1. The war acts as outlet for demonisation (there are many countries in the world committing far worse crimes than Iraq)
2. Without 'demons' (=terrorists) to hunt and kill, there is no justification for large defense spending
3. Without large defense spending, a large number of US companies would go bust
4. And a lot of US citizens would lose their jobs

So it's nothing to do with Iraq, really... They're collateral damage. Hmmm - I can see some truth in these views.

I can see some truth in them, too. Anyone who believes that in March of '03 Saddam Hussein was the greatest threat to the U.S. and world peace just wasn't paying attention. But he was a convenient target, sitting on a bunch of oil, and the US military and Administration assumed that taking him down would be easy and quick. Idiots.

Actually that sounds like fun, Tiffany. Next year, maybe.
