Alas, Second BOW Award Goes To a Democrat

Today I have the dubious honor of handing out my second BOW (Buffoon Of the Week) Award.  This week's competition was quite heated -- actually I feel confident in saying that every week's competition will be heated.  It seems that American politicians and pundits are constantly looking for ways to be buffoons and, more often than not, they succeed.

This week the choice for the BOW Award came down to two.  Both candidates played to our worst instincts, one of them resorting to homophobic comments, the other to race-baiting.  What a pair.

On the one hand, we had Oklahoma State Representative Sally Kern, a Republican from Oklahoma City, who suggested earlier this year that homosexuality poses a greater threat to the United States than terrorism.  "The homosexual agenda is just destroying this nation," she said.  "They are going after our young children, as young as two years of age, to try to teach them that the homosexual lifestyle is an acceptable lifestyle.  This stuff is deadly and it's spreading and it will destroy our young people, it will destroy this nation."  State Representative Kern went on to assure people that she was "not gay-bashing," and that she had "never said hate speech against anybody.  I would never do that."

In a normal week, Ms. Kern would be a shoe-in for the BOW Award.  Clearly the woman is either too bigoted, too filled with hate and irrational fear (despite her claims to the contrary), to deserve the public trust the people of Oklahoma City have granted her, or she's too stupid to understand what it is she's said and why so many people are angry with her.  Either way, she would be a worthy recipient of the award.

But this is an election year, and there are many idiots running around right now, saying stupid things.  Sadly for me, one of them is a Democrat.

I have been a fan of Geraldine Ferraro for more than a decade.  I still remember that day in the summer of 1984 when Walter Mondale announced that she would be his running mate in the fall Presidential campaign.  Already, we Democrats knew that we would lose the election, but I was so proud of my party, and I so admired the grace and strength Representative Ferraro showed throughout the campaign.

All of which made her behavior this week so depressing.

In case you missed it, Ms. Ferraro, who was on Hillary Clinton's campaign finance committee, claimed this week that the only reason Barack Obama had done so well and gotten so far in this Presidential campaign was that he's African-American.  If he were white, she said, he wouldn't be in the position he's in.  "He happens to be very lucky to be who he is."  When she was criticized for these remarks, she responded by saying, "I really think they're attacking me because I'm white."

*(I posted portions of the following on CNN's I-reports -- if this looks familiar, that's why)* Of course, Ms. Ferraro has a point.  Throughout our nation's history, we whites have had to struggle under the twin yokes of wealth and privilege.  We have had to endure limitless opportunity, while being forced to accept superior health care, housing, and nutrition.  Under the oppressive burden that is White Life In America, we have had to make our way through well-funded schools, only to find that the jobs that await us after graduation are secure and well-compensated.  Nor is this a new development.  Whites founded this nation and the legacy of that power and influence, not to mention the boundless opportunities that come with them, have been our burden ever since.  That every President elected since the founding of the Republic has been white is nothing short of miraculous.

Give me a friggin' break, Geraldine.  If you really believe that being African-American and having a name like "Barack Obama" has afforded this candidate an easier path to the White House, you're either delusional or you're being intentionally disingenuous.  Either way, you have lost my respect.  We have real issues to deal with in this country -- an immoral war, looming environmental catastrophe, an economy gone belly-up.  This nonsense not only belittles these more pressing matters, it also hurts us as a party and as a nation.  You should be ashamed of yourself.

Though difficult for this devoted Democrat, I hereby give my second BOW Award to former Representative Geraldine Ferraro (D-NY).  Geraldine, take a BOW.  You deserve it.
