Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy

Saw Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy tonight (at our local theater, which plays movies about six months after they're current.  I read the book not too long ago and enjoyed it well enough.  I still found the movie confusing.  I would imagine that for those who hadn't read the book, including my wife, the movie was utterly impenetrable.  Too bad, really.  Good story, good cast.  But the film itself was just too opaque.

Yes, it is Alec Guinness, and one of the things that struck watching this version was the degree to which Gary Oldman seemed to have patterned his syntax and accent after Guinness. I kept on expecting him to pull out a light saber....

I borrowed the Alec Guinness DVDs from the library, but couldn't get into it at all. I'm usually pretty good at keeping up with complicated storylines, but it just craaaawled sooooo sloooowly.

I'm hoping I like the movie better.

I would suggest reading the book before seeing the movie. Although the book is a little slow, too. I wonder if there are Cliff Notes...
