Playing Grown-Up

Last night was the annual Mountain Top Ball at the university where Nancy teaches. Years ago I would have told you that black tie balls were not the sort of thing we'd be interested in attending, but when the first ball was held back in 2003 (or so) several of our friends decided that it would be fun to get all dressed up, have a party ahead of time, and then go en masse to the ball.

They were right. That first year we all had a blast, and so now it's become something of a tradition. I put on a tux, Nancy puts on a fancy dress and new shoes and (gasp!) a bit of make-up, and we go to our friends' house. There, with several other couples, we drink champagne, eat hors d'oeuvres, and marvel at one another's fancy clothes. After a while we go over to the ball, where we eat more, have a bit more to drink, and dance and dance and dance. Great fun.

Most of us leave early -- there's a weird changing of the guard that happens each year at the ball. The faculty members and their spouses go early and enjoy the hits from the '60s, '70s, and '80s that the band prepares especially for us. Yeah, there are some students there, but they have to dance to our music... And then, around the time all of us are getting tired and thinking it's time to get home and pay the babysitter, the college students show up in big numbers. The band starts playing stuff from the '90s and beyond, the place gets rowdier, hotter, more crowded. We're usually just as happy to be on our way.

But for those few hours, it sure is fun playing dress-up and pretending to be grown-ups.

Today's music: Counting Crows (August and Everything After)

You know this fancy new LJ of yours supports the posting of photographs, don't you?

Hmmmm. Is that what passes for subtlety in your neck of the woods?

Yeah, some of our friends had cameras there last night. When we get photos I'll post one.

Thanks for checking out the blog. How're you doing?!

Things are going pretty well up here. We're going to Jamaica next week. Plus, I finally lost a World Fantasy Award, so now I've got the Hugo/Neb/World Fantasy trifecta of major genre award losses under my belt.

Ah, yes. I forgot. You're a glass-half-empty kind of guy. From where I sit, you have the trifecta of major genre award nominations to your credit, which is indicative of the fine quality of your prose, if not your skills at career achievement self-assessment.

Hope you have a terrific time in Jamaica.

Playing dress up is fun!
I want to get Ren his own tux -- for just such occassions.
Bet you and Nancy looked fab!

Re: dress up
It WAS fun. And while I was skeptical about getting the tux (Nancy encouraged me) I was glad to have it. I used to go to the black tie things in a suit, which was fine, but I always felt just a little out of place.
